University of Sto. Tomas survives a five-set battle against De La Salle for its first win in two outings.
University of Sto. Tomas showed nerves of steel down the crucial stretch of the fifth set to barge in the win column and bounce back from its opening day loss.
The Growling Tigers kept its composure after squandering a six-point lead in the fifth frame to outlast De La Salle University, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12, Saturday in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Tied at 12-12 after UST saw its 8-2 lead evaporate, the Tigers scored back-to-back hits capped by skipper Arnold Bautista's smash to put UST at match point.
DLSU hitter Arjay Onia tried to answer back but Jayvee Sumagasysay was there to shut the door for the game-clinching kill block that evened UST’s record to 1-1 tied with idle National University.
“Work in progress talaga kasi pito ang bago diyan eh,” said Tigers mentor Odjie Mamon, whose team bowed to three-peat seeking Ateneo de Manila in straight sets a week ago.
“Sa fifth set malaki ang lamang pero hinabol. (Sinabi ko sa kanila) na we have to overcome ‘yung situation na ‘yun kasi nangyayari talaga ‘yun. Commit ng service error then susundan ‘yun ng four more lalo na sa mid-game,” he added. “Lahat ng five-setter na games, character building para sa amin at lahat ng players.”
Jerico Jose led four other UST players in double figures with 18 points. Manuel Medina scored all of his 17 markers off attacks, Bautista had 11 while Tyrone Carodan and Sumagaysay had 10 each for the Espana-based squad.
DLSU dropped to 0-2 win-loss card tied with University of the East and Adamson.
The Green Spikers, who absorbed a straight sets beating from Far Eastern University last week, got 16 points from Onia, Cris Dumago got 14 while Raymark Woo and Joshua Jose finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
