Team effort paved the way for Ateneo de Manila to win its third straight game for the solo lead.
Who will stop the three-peat seeking Ateneo de Manila?
Definitely not Far Eastern University, at least for the first round of eliminations.
The Blue Eagles flexed their muscles to bully their way to their third straight win at the expense of the erstwhile unbeaten Tamaraws, 25-18, 25-15, 25-19, Sunday in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
FEU gave Ateneo some resistance early in the first and third set but the Blue Eagles were just too much for the Tams to handle.
Ateneo took the solo top spot, a full game clear of University of the Philippines (2-0). The Blue Eagles will take on Adamson on Saturday.
Ish Polvorosa was the man of the match, dishing out 30 excellent sets to get most of his teammates involved on offense and confuse the defense of FEU. All but one of the nine scoring players fielded by coach Oliver Almadro chipping in points.
Reigning three-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo was again a monster on the attack hitting 10-of-18 kills for 12 points while skipper Karl Baysa had 10. Rex Intal posted three kill blocks for nine points while Josh Villanueva and Tony Koyfman scored 18 each for the Katipunan-based squad,
“Para sa akin we played well,” said Almadro. “I told my players the past practices namin na we have to squeeze ourselves a little more.”
“We saw how FEU played in their couple of games and they are very energetic. We have to practice in that kind of situation also and nag-payoff naman lahat ng sacrifices ng mga bata at nag-payoff din ang pagkawala ng boses ko,” a very happy Almadro added.
FEU dropped its first match in three outings to tie National University at third to fourth spot.
Greg Dolor was limited to 10 points while Jude Garcia had nine for the Tams, who will face winless University of the East Saturday.
