Yoshiharu Koizumi (6) scored De La Salle's first goal of the season en route to a 2-0 win over University of the East.
Yoshiharu Koizumi scored early in the second half, while an own goal from John Saldivar helped De La Salle survive University of the East, 2-0, to get their first win in UAAP men’s football action, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Green Archers were in command for much of the first half, with Koizumi hitting their opening goal in the seventeenth minute of action.
With a manageable one-goal deficit, the Red Warriors started strong in the second half of play, coming up with two quick opportunities at an equalizer, the closest being sophomore Mar Diano’s attempt inside the penalty box.
Unfortunately for UE, their only conversion of the match would come in the form of an own goal from Saldivar off a Noel Brago free kick in the 79th minute.
While De La Salle gets their first win of the season, head coach Hans Smit was far from happy with his team’s performance.
“Not good.” Smit said after the match. “Team’s not in the groove yet, we lacked finishing.”
I’m not happy about it, we still need a lot of work.” Smit added.
After holding the defending champions to an opening day draw, De La Salle improves to one win and one draw for four points in the season.
