Ateneo de Manila University faced another tough challenge but this time the Lady Eagles were able to pull through.

Third year player Michelle Morente was glad that the Katipunan-based squad lived up with their heartstrong mantra to complete a come-from-behind, 25-19, 24-26, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11, win against Far Eastern University Sunday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Down 1-2 in the match, Morente and other veterans Bea De Leon, Jho Maraguinot, Maddie Madayag and hurting playmaker Jia Morado, who was under the weather and suffering stomach pain, stepped up to carry the Lady Eagles back in the win column.

“Happy kami kasi even though we were down, we pushed ourselves and didn't give up,” said Morente after Ateneo’s bounce back win after a four-set loss against league-leading National University last Wednesday. “FEU is a tough opponent talaga. So parang kami, nagagamit namin 'yung ginagawa namin sa training.”

Morente had a solid performance of 17 points with 14 digs and 12 excellent receptions but the outside hitter gave the credit to Morado, who had a monster game with 53 excellent sets that Ateneo converted to 52 attack points.

“For now it was good. Sa 17 points ko, I give Jia the credit kasi she really played great today kahit may sakit siya,” she said. “She still pushed herself to do her best.”

Ateneo, which improved to 2-1 win-loss record, played without head coach Tai Bundit, who is in Thailand to attend the funeral of his mother-in-law.

“Kahit naman wala si coach Tai, nandiyan pa rin 'yung ibang coaches to guide us sa mga iniwang bilin ni coach Tai,” said Morente. “Nagwo-work pa rin kami as a team. We still really push ourselves kasi kami din naman 'yung mahihirapan kung hindi namin aayusin 'yung training.”

Aside from their heartstrong mantra, Ateneo fueled their comeback by playing happy – a signature trait of the Lady Eagles.

“Feeling ko 'yung pag-iingay namin sa loob ng court,” said Morente. “Kasi nakita niyo naman na medyo tumahimik kami noong second at third set. 'Yung communication lang and energy namin as a team 'yung nag-boost ng morale namin.”

Ateneo will face winless Adamson on Saturday.
