Rupert Baña (23) was one of four Blue Eagles to score as Ateneo downed UST, 5-1, in UAAP men's football action.
Four Ateneans found the back of the net, Sunday evening at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium as the Blue Eagles soared past University of Santo Tomas, 5-1 to claim solo lead in UAAP men's football action.
It took the Blue Eagles only ten minutes to get on the board as reigning Best Striker Jarvey Gayoso scored the first goal of the match on a free kick attempt.
It didn't take long for the Tigers to respond, as AJ Pasion found the equalizer just a minute later.
That would be the last time that the match would be even, as Ateneo poured it on soon after, with Ryan Haosen scoring the go-ahead goal in the 37th minute.
The Blue Eagle booters would slowly put the game out of reach in the second half, with Rupert Baña scoring in the 60th minute to push the lead to 3-1.
With less than a minute left in regulation, Paolo Alilam shut the door on any potential UST comeback, scoring in the 81st minute, and then one last time in injury time to seal the win.
"Yung team, naglaro talaga ng maayos," said a jubilant Ateneo head coach JP Merida. "Especially yung game na yun, ang ganda ng counter attack."
Merida went on to give credit to subs Baña and Alilam, who provided the bulk of the team's scoring output in the match.
"Sakto talaga yung substitutions namin, in the one minute, two minutes nagperform agad talaga sila, si Baña, and yung last talaga, si Alilam. Of course, mga deserving players naman talaga sila."
Ateneo improves to three wins in three matches for nine points this season. They take solo lead, while UP is at a close second with two wins and a draw for seven points while FEU is at third with two wins and six points. La Salle rounds out the top four with one win and one draw for four points
