MISMATCH. John Lloyd Clemente, by his lonesome, was too much for DLSZ to handle.
There was no contest – John Lloyd Clemente was the best player and Nazareth School of National University was the better team on the court on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Clemente pumped in 28 points and had four other teammates contribute at least six points as the Bullpups proved to be no match for De La Salle Zobel in their 72-50 convincing victory.
The graduating swingman also hauled seven rebounds while Rhayyan Amsali and Muhammed Sarip combined for 18 points and 18 rebounds to help NU make its way into the championship round for the sixth time in a row.
Now in the UAAP 79 Juniors Basketball Tournament, the Bullpups and head coach Jeff Napa will attempt to score their fourth championship in the last six years.
Clemente made sure of that as he went berserk from the get-go with 18 points in the first half alone. For comparison, all of the Junior Archers only mustered 20 points in the same timeframe.
The rout was on after only 14 minutes as the defending champions’ versatile forward fronted an offensive that already had 28 points at the midway mark of the second. At the other end, they only allowed eight points from their opponents.
NU would not be threatened the rest of the way. “I’m happy for the boys. Nag-perform talaga sila better than we expexted,” a satisfied consultant Jeff Napa expressed.
In all, the Bullpups made good on 41.5 percent of their shots while making life miserable for DLSZ which shot below 30 percent from the field.
Napa and his boys will now wait for the victor in the matchup between Far Eastern University-Diliman and Ateneo de Manila High School on Friday. “Ready na kami sa championship. Bakbakan na ulit dun,” Napa said.
Jan Sobrevega was the lone Junior Archer in double-digits with 13 points. They bow out of contention a year after placing second.
