Lady Spikers, Lady Maroons battle for a share of the lead
The tandem of veteran setter Kim Fajardo and middle hitter Major Baron of reigning champion De La Salle will be tested against the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons.

Unbeaten teams defending champion De La Salle Lady Spikers and University of the Philippines Lady Maroons dispute a share of the lead Wednesday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Game time is at 4:00 p.m. and will air live over ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 23 and via livestream.

The Lady Spikers and Lady Maroons are tied at second to third spots with 2-0 win-loss record behind the league-leading National University (3-0).

Behind the trio of sophomore Diana Carlos and Isa Molde and graduating hitter Nicole Tiamzon, the Diliman-based squad swept the University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-16, 26-24, 25-19, last Saturday. UP defeated Adamson also in straight sets to open their campaign.

But the wards of Lady Maroons coach Jerry Yee will face their real test against the Lady Spikers.

“Hindi pu-pwedeng ma-caught off guard,” said Yee.

The mentor particularly pointed out that DLSU’s middles are the ones holding the fort in the Lady Spikers’ two straight wins.

“Kailangang paghandaan ang middles nila,” he added. “Then siyempre we should not forget the other aspects of their game. Yung services nila, yung mga openers nila at beteranong setters nila.”

DLSU is coming off a 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-22 win over University of Sto. Tomas last Saturday.

For the second straight game, it was Season 78 Finals Most Valuable Player Kim Dy that stepped up to lead the Lady Spikers with 16 points while middle and Season 78 Best Blocker Majoy Baron and Ernestine Tiamzon provided the support.

“Maganda ang ipinapakita ng UP ngayon we’ll just see kung ano ang puwedeng gawing adjustments. Kasi ang nakakalaro pa lang ng UP ay ang Adamson at UE,” said Lady Spikers coach Ramil De Jesus.
