Nakaka-overwhelm -- Tiamzon on UP's win over DLSU
Nakaka-overwhelm and sobrang saya kasi ngayon lang namin natalo ang La Salle after ilang taon -- UPs Nicole Tiamzon

Nicole Tiamzon was on cloud nine Wednesday night when the graduating University of the Philippines hitter granted a short interview to a group of reporters waiting outside of the Lady Maroons’ locker room inside The Arena in San Juan.

The unbeaten UP finally found a way to defeat the defending champion De La Salle University after almost a decade of being on the losing end of their UAAP women’s volleyball head-to-head.

Tiamzon was at the forefront of the Diliman-based squad’s biggest win so far in Season 79, scoring all of her 16 points from blinding kills.

“Nakaka-overwhelm and sobrang saya kasi ngayon lang namin natalo ang La Salle after ilang taon,” said Tiamzon, who in her first four years of service for the State University tried but failed to lead her team to victory against the Lady Spikers.

It was a sweet moment for Tiamzon when she sent a missile to put the Lady Maroons at match point with the UP crowd already on their feet waiting to celebrate the end of 16 straight games of futility against the mighty Taft-based squad.

DLSU’s Ernestine Tiamzon committed an attack error, hitting the net in the next play as the Lady Maroons rushed at center court filled will overwhelming emotions.

UP is now on top of the standings tied with National University with 3-0 record while sending DLSU to its first loss of the season in three starts.

The victory was the first for UP since winning by forfeiture back in January 20, 2008 in Season 70. The Lady Spikers won that game but was forfeited along with all of their second round wins due to the ineligibility of Jacqueline Alarca (academic technicalities).

UP assistant coach Rald Ricafort said that they prepared well for the game, even asking their players to do their own review and scouting of the Lady Spikers.

The win was a collective effort by the whole team both outside and inside of the court.

“Kasi kami tinuturuan ng coaches mag-scout sa sarili naming. ‘Di pwedeng wala kaming alam pagpapasok sa court,” said Tiamzon. “Kami pinag-aaralan namin ang team. The whole team, nagtutulong-tulong.”

UP will bring the morale-boosting win on Sunday against University of Sto. Tomas.
