University of Sto. Tomas wins its first game of the season.
University of Sto. Tomas barged in the win column in a sweep of listless University of the East, 25-9, 25-22, 25-23, Wednesday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Tigresses ended a two-game losing slump while handing the Lady Warriors their third straight loss in as many games tied with Adamson at the cellar.
EJ Laure, Ria Meneses and Cherry Rondina showed the way for the Espana-based squad, which dropped its first two games against powerhouse Ateneo de Manila and defending champion De La Salle University.
Meneses scored 13 points while Laure and Rondina finished with 12 points each for the Tigresses, who outgunned the Lady Warriors 39-16 in kills. Rondina scored all her points from attacks while Laure smashed 10 spikes.
UST, which dominated the opening set, had quite a scare in the second when UE tied the frame at 21-all after chopping down its 18-12 deficit capped by back-to-back aces by Laizah Bendong. Laure then broke a 22-22 tie to win the set with three straight attacks.
The Tigresses again got into trouble in the third set with the Lady Warriors behind Bendong, Mary Anne Mendrez, Angelica Dacaymat and Judith Abil building a 22-20 lead but UST was able to pull through down the stretch with Rondina hitting crucial hits including the game-clinching off the block kill after UE saved a match point to wrap up the ballgame.
Mendrez and Jasmine Alcayde led the Lady Warriors with six points each while skipper Shaya Adorador had a disappointing outing with only one point playing only in the first two sets.
UE remained winless and started like the same team that went 0-of-58 in the previous four seasons after getting buried deep, 3-19. The Lady Warriors in the first set only had one attack, a kill block and an ace while receiving six free points off UST’s errors.
