University of Sto. Tomas is out on a prowl to barge in the win column.
University of the East and University of Sto. Tomas get a chance to taste victory Wednesday in the battle of winless teams in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Both winless after two games into the season, the Lady Warriors and Tigresses troop inside the court at 2:00 p.m. with hopes of shaking off an early slump.
The match will air live over ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 23 and via livestream.
Aside from the two, the other remaining winless team is Adamson University, which is down three straight.
The Espana-base squad was considered as one of the title favorites heading into the season but was off to a shaky start losing to Ateneo in straight sets before bowing down to the defending champion De La Salle University, 23-25, 25-16, 14-25, 22-25, last Saturday.
Hitters EJ Laure, Cherry Rondina, Ria Meneses and graduating player Pam Lastimosa need to provide the spark needed to finally pluck UST’s first win.
But they will have to deal with the Lady Warriors' formidable defensive wall.
Not the pushover team that went 1-of-59 for four seasons, the Lady Warriors may have lost its first two games but they are playing better than they were the previous year and could pull off a stunner if not taken seriously.
UE lost to University of the Philippines 16-25, 24-26, 19-25, last Saturday but gave the Lady Maroons’ spikers a hard time penetrating their net defense. The Lady Warriors had 14 kill blocks with seven coming from Seth Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, Shaya Adorador, Judith Abil, Mary Anne Mendrez and 6-foot-2 setter Roselle Baliton are expected to again show their fighting form to help UE barge in the win column.
