Gayoso lifts Ateneo to perfect start in men's football
Jarvey Gayoso (11) scored in the first half to lead Ateneo past DLSU, 1-0, in UAAP men's football action
Make it four-for-four for Ateneo de Manila, as Jarvey Gayoso scored in the first half to help the Blue Eagles dispatch De La Salle, 1-0, Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field and improve to 4-0-0 in UAAP men's football action.
With the classic rivalry atmosphere, the intensity was high from the opening moments, as both sides attacked early.
It was the home team that drew first blood however, as league-leading scorer Gayoso added another conversion to his season tally, faking-out one defender before sending the ball past DLSU keeper Kerbi Almonte's hands.
The Green Archers would play catch-up for the remainder of the match, fighting to find an equalizer.
The closest that De La Salle would come to tying the match was late in the second half, but ultimately couldn't convert and Ateneo held on for the win.
"Playing against La Salle, mahirap talaga," said Ateneo head coach JP Merida after their closest match of the season.
"I'd like to apologize to the Ateneo community dahil hindi ganun ka-ganda yung laro...pero I'm proud of my players, four straight wins? Talagang napaka-hirap." Merida said.
Ateneo remains at the top of the UAAP Men's Football standings with four wins and 12 points, while UP is close behind with two wins and a draw for seven points, followed by FEU with six points. La Salle remains at fourth with one win, one draw, and a loss for four points.
Ateneo held on for the win and they improve their unbeaten streak to four straight matches.
