Ian De Castro, front, scored the go ahead goal for UST in the second half.
AJ Pasion hit the equalizer, while Ian De Castro scored the go-ahead goal in the second half to help University of Santo Tomas come back and beat University of the East, 2-1, for their first win in the UAAP Season 79 men's football tournament, Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo football field in Ateneo.
UE looked like they were on track to get their first win of the season after Jo Mallen got things going for the Red Warriors early, scoring the opening goal ten minutes into the match.
Pasio gave the España-based side a sigh or relief right before halftime however, converting in the 42nd minute and tie things up for UST.
UST took the driver's seat in the second half, courtesy of De Castro's 56th minute conversion and would hold on to the lead, fighting off an UE rally.
UST head coach Marjo Allado was relieved, more than anything, to finally get in the win column after dropping their first two matches.
He hopes that the win can finally jumpstart UST's confidence.
"Sana yung players, kahit nanalo kami, sana mag-tuloy tuloy lang siya, yung spirit ba, bumalik lang yung kumpiyansa nila, at least naka-gain kami ng three points," Allado said post match.
"Nag-gain sila ng confidence and at the same time, it puts pressure on the other team." Allado added.
The Tigers will need all the confidence they can get as they face the surging defending champions UP on Sunday.
The win improves UST's record to one win and two losses for three points, while UE drops to one draw and two three losses for one point.
