Ateneo team captain Camille Rodriguez (7) celebrates after scoring an equalizer against FEU.
Skipper Camille Rodriguez recorded a hat trick, including two crucial conversions late in the second half to push Ateneo de Manila past Far Eastern University, 4-3, in UAAP women’s football action, Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
An own goal from Ateneo’s Nina Catedrilla got things going 13 minutes into the match to give the former three-peat champions the early lead, but it didn’t take long for Ateneo to come up with an equalizer, as Pamela Diaz scored just six minutes later.
The Lady Tams jumped right back in front a minute later courtesy of team captain Jovelle Sudaria’s free kick.
Ateneo’s Rodriguez got on the board with the Lady Eagles’ second equalizer of the match in the 27th minute after sinking a penalty off a handball call on FEU.
FEU got on the board first again in the second half, with Bia Requerme putting the Lady Tams back up in the 58th minute of action.
With her team seemingly headed for their first loss of the season and yet another loss to the Lady Tams, Rodriguez provided the late game heroics, first pulling the Lady Eagles even in the 76th minute, and then giving the Katipunan side the lead with another conversion just two minutes later.
With less than ten minutes remaining, it looked as if FEU would be given a chance to pull even after a hard tackle in the box was initially rewarded with a penalty kick. The call was later rescinded, and the Lady Eagles held on for the 4-3 victory.
Graduating team captain Rodriguez spoke highly of her coaches an teammates after the match. “I’m very proud of my team, and much of our win and our success is because of the coaches, they really prepared for the game, they really thought how we should play against FEU, so our performance right now is well thought of, and the team just followed the gameplan,”
“I think it’s really about momentum,” Rodriguez added about her game-winning brace. “Siguro at that time, we really just followed the instructions of our coaches, and their instruction was to keep pushing, keep pressing them high, and luckily it converted to the two goals.”
The Ateneo women’s team scores their second win in as many games, and they move into the top of the women’s standings with six points. FEU on the other hand, begins the season with back-to-back losses.
