National University wins its second straight match.
National University battled its way back from a set down to snatch its second straight win in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Bulldogs defeated De La Salle University, 27-29, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19, Sunday to improve to 3-1 win-loss slate in a three-team logjam behind undefeated reigning champion Ateneo de Manila (4-0).
NU tied University of the Philippines and Far Eastern University at second to fourth place.
Fauzi Ismail and Bryan Bagunas combined for 24 of the Bulldogs’ 52 attack points. Ismail finished with 17 points while Bagunas had 16 for NU.
James Natividad added 14 markers for the Bulldogs, who had 11 kill blocks. Setter Kim Dayandante had 42 excellent sets for NU.
The Bulldogs won its second straight match since losing to archrival Ateneo in their second assignment of the season but head coach Dante Alinsunurin was far from satisfied.
“Parang noong first set kasi naghihintay na lang kami ng kung anong gagawin ng kalaban eh,” he said. “Hindi namin naunahan sa kung anong pwede nilang gawin. Hindi na sila naging agresibo sa galaw nila.”
The Green Spikers dropped its third game in four starts.
Arjay Onia had 12 points while Cris Dumago finished with nine for DLSU. Raymark Woo was limited to only eight points.
