Kinakabahan (ako) kasi pataas nang pataas ang expectation to perform (well) -- Nicole Tiamzon
The University of the Philippines is enjoying its best start in a long time.
But while the Lady Maroons are piling up victories, the pressure of high expectations on the Diliman-based squad in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball is also mounting.
Graduating Nicole Tiamzon said that they are already feeling the pressure to deliver for the Diliman-based squad, which is currently on top of the standings with a perfect 4-0 win-loss record.
“Kinakabahan (ako) kasi pataas nang pataas ang expectation to perform (well),” said the outside hitter, who scored 13 points in UP’s 25-22, 25-22, 29-31, 25-19, win over University of Sto. Tomas.
“Syempre kasama ang pressure talaga and kailangan talaga namin ma-push ang sarili namin,” added the fifth year player.
UP swept Adamson, University of the East and defending champion De La Salle University in its first three outings before dropping a set for the first time this season against UST.
Tiamzon, who spent her first three years with UP struggling to break out of the bottom four before leading the Lady Maroons to a Final Four stint after 13 years of drought, reminded her teammates not to let their early success get into their heads, that hey still have a long way to go.
“Pag nag-relax kami puwede rin kaming matalo, pwedeng masira ang kumpyansa namin, so wala kaming time magrelax talaga,” she said.
“(Sinasabi ko sa kanila na) ‘wag magpapadala sa nangyayari, meaning mag-focus kami sa team namin mismo, tuluy-tuloy lang kung ano ang ginagawa namin,” added Tiamzon.
The Lady Maroons will take on another tough challenge against Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday.
