Marck Espejo once again led Ateneo de Manila to its fifth straight win in as many outings.
Just another day at the office.
Three-peat seeking Ateneo de Manila made an easy picking of the hapless University of the East Red Warriors, 25-17, 25-13, 25-22, Wednesday to pluck its fifth straight win in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Katipunan-based squad kept their clean sheet intact to keep a tight hold of the lead with just two games to go in the first round of eliminations.
Just like in their first four games, the usual suspects delivered for Ateneo.
Three-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo scored 15 points with 10 coming off attacks while Rex Intal had 10 points. Josh Villanueva and Karl Baysa combined for 14 points for the Blue Eagles, who scored 39 attack points with 32 coming off seasoned setter Ish Polvorosa’s excellent sets.
Ateneo will face University of the Philippines next before closing the round against De La Salle.
The Red Warriors were buried deeper down the cellar with its fifth straight loss and 33rd in a row overall since Season 78.
With the Blue Eagles building a solid wall in front of the net, the UE hitters were silenced with Edward Camposano and Samuel Lelic Jr. held down to only six points apiece.
