UP FIGHT. Juan Gomez de Liano will bring home to Diliman a long-awaited, much-wanted MVP award.
Juan Gomez de Liano is proving to be the ray of light in what has been a long, dark tunnel for the University of the Philippines.
The King Junior Maroon has been recognized as the Most Valuable Player in the UAAP 79 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Gomez de Liano is the first basketball MVP to hail from Diliman – in either the Seniors or Juniors – since 2007. The last one to achieve the feat was Joseph Marata, another Junior Maroon.
“All I can say is thank you. This is all God’s plan,” he expressed after accepting the award on Friday.
The 16-year-old averaged 19.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals to edge out runner-up SJ Belangel of Ateneo de Manila High School.
UP Integrated School and Gomez de Liano fell two wins short of the playoffs, but their 5-9 record is still their best in recent history.
Making up the Mythical Team are Gomez de Liano, Belangel, Dave Ildefonso also of Ateneo, Nazareth School of National University’s John Lloyd Clemente, and University of Sto. Tomas’ Inand Fornillos.
