Bulldogs nip Tams in sweep

National University wins its third straight match to take the solo second spot behind unbeaten defending champion Ateneo de Manila.
National University recovered from two points down in the third set to bite the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23, Saturday for the solo second spot in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Bulldogs took their third straight win for a 4-1 win-loss record behind league-leading defending champions Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles (5-0).
Taking their guards down after winning the first two sets, the Bulldogs saw themselves trailing, 21-19, before NU blasted four straight points to take a 23-21 lead capped by a service ace by Bryan Bagunas.
Greg Dolor led FEU’s counterattack to tie the frame at 23. Fauzi Ismail unleashed a laser for put NU at matchpoint before the Bulldogs sealed the win.
“Mas maganda na ‘yung nangyayari na ngayon ang mga anyang bagay na napapabayaan namin. Nag-relax kami na akala namin na tapos na ang game kasi na-2-0 namin sila. Sana matuto sila sa mga nangyari sa amin noong third set,” said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin.
Bagunas displayed his scoring prowess with 16 points anchored on 11 spikes, three aces and a pair of kill blocks for NU, which drilled 40 attack points. Ismail, who sparked the comeback of the Bulldogs, finished with 15 points while Kim Malababunga had 12 markers.
The Tams slid to 3-2 card tied with University of Sto. Tomas.
Dolor had 13 points while John Paul Bugaoan scored 10 for FEU.
