BROTHERS IN ARMS. The UP Fighting Maroons will now count a couple of Gomez de Lianos as key cogs.

Make that two GDLs staying home in Diliman.

A day after being hailed as the MVP in the UAAP 79 Juniors Basketball Tournament, King Junior Maroon Juan Gomez de Liano is set to move up and become a Fighting Maroon.

“Yes, I have committed to UP,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.

“This is just one step, one phase in wha is a continuing effort to make the Maroons more competitive,” team manager Dan Palami said on Saturday after they secured the services of the 16-year-old.

His commitment signals a reunion with kuya Javi now in the University of the Philippines.

The older GDL also committed to UP and provided immediate impact as a rookie in Season 79.

There may very well be an encore in Season 80 for the Gomez de Lianos with the entry of Juan who boasted per game counts of 19.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals as the main man for UP Integrated School. Those numbers proved to be more than enough for him to be recognized as the top individual player in the tournament.

The six-foot-two off-guard will grant head coach Bo Perasol an ideal replacement for the now-graduated Jett Manuel. His scoring skills are his most notable strength, but he has also been showcasing developing playmaking in the ongoing tournament.

State U is hoping to build on their surprisingly successful Season 79 next year with Mythical member Paul Desiderio taking the reins of leadership. He will be surrounded by a youthful core composed of the Gomez de Lianos, Diego Dario, Jarrel Lim, and Noah Webb as well as highly-touted Cebuano Jun Manzo.
