Toni Basas led Far Eastern University to a four-set win over National University.
Far Eastern University dealt National University its second straight defeat, 25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20 Saturday as the Lady Tamaraws sparked a two-game winning run in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Tams took advantage of the Lady Bulldogs poor reception to score their first consecutive wins of the season and tie their victim at fourth to fifth spots with 3-2 win-loss records.
"Hopefully ito maging simula ng magandang kompiyansa sa laro namin," FEU coach Shaq Delos Santos said. "Sabi nga namin sa mga players namin itong last three games namin kailangan kunin natin. Huwag tayong umasa sa first round. Itong first round dito tayo kumuha (ng panalo) para kung magkaroon man ng adjustments. Hindi na mahirap para sa atin."
Veterans Bernadeth Pons, Jerrili Malabanan and Toni Basas teamed up to dismantle NU, which failed to recover from a straight sets loss to reigning champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers last week.
Basas, who was benched last game in their win over University of the East both for disciplinary action and strategy, came out with bang hammering 17 spikes for 20 points while Pons and Malabanan had 18 and 10 markers, respectively, for FEU. Pons had 20 digs and 15 excellent receptions for an all-around performance.
FEU broke a 19-all deadlock with five straight points highlighted by Pons’ back-to-back aces. The Lady Bulldogs saved a match point but Kyle Negrito made a heady play to seal the victory by fooling the defenders clogging the net with a drop ball at the middle.
Jaja Santiago was the only player in double-digit for NU with 20 points coming of 16 attacks and four kill blocks. Jorelle Singh had seven while Risa Sato and Aiko Urdas got five each for the Lady Bulldogs.
