Ateneo de Manila guns for its sixth win in a row.
Unbeaten defending champion Ateneo de Manila eyes its sixth straight win Sunday in a duel with University of the Philippines in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The match is slated at 10:00 a.m. and will air live over ABS-CBN S+A and via livestream.
Behind the consistent play of three-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo, who is averaging 16 points per game with an impressive 61.82% success rate in attacks, and ample support coming from Josh Villanueva, Rex Intal, Karl Baysa and 6-foot-8 Antony Koyfman, the Blue Eagles remain unscathed and perched on top of the standings with a 5-0 win-loss record.
Ateneo made quick work of University of the East, 25-17, 25-13, 25-22, last Wednesday but the Blue Eagles are expected to face a tougher battle this time against their Katipunan neighbor.
The Fighting Maroons are currently at third place with a 3-1 slate behind solo second National University (4-1).
UP survived a five-set showdown with University of Sto. Tomas, 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-8 a week ago.
Meanwhile, De La Salle battles winless University of the East at 8:00 a.m.
The Green Spikers are coming off a 24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 26-28, loss at the hands of Adamson last Wednesday where ace scorer Raymark Woo went down in the first set with a minor left knee injury that will sideline him for at least three weeks.
DLSU is at seventh place with a 1-4 mark.
The Red Warriors are down with a five-game losing streak and 33 in a row overall.
