NU skipper Patrick Valenzuela (28) scored a goal en route to a 2-1 win over Adamson University.
A couple of conversions from Patrick Valenzuela and Elmer Sampaga were enough for National University to take down Adamson University, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium for their first win in UAAP Season 79 men's football action.
The Bulldogs, who have struggled this season since getting an opening day draw against University of the East, went to work early, with Valenzuela scoring just seven minutes into the match.
NU would find the back of the net once more, this time in the tail end of the first half, this time with a 40th minute goal from Sampaga to double the bulldog lead by halftime.
Adamson started the second half strong, with Khristian Melliza pulling one back for the Falcons after converting on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, they weren't able to capitalize on the momentum, and NU manages to hold on for win number one.
"I'm happy na nanalo kayo," New NU head coach Mari Aberasturi told his boys during the post-match huddle. "Savor this feeling, pero you have to work harder."
"Nag-aadjust kami sa play namin ngayon, kasi bagong coach, bagong sistema ng laro," team captain Patrick Valenzuela said, talking about their struggles this season.
The third-year midfielder-turned striker added that he and Lawrence Colina needed to make the jump to the striker postion after the departure of guys like Paolo Salenga and Nico Macapal.
The win gives NU four points in the season as they improve to one win, one draw, and three losses.
Adamson on the other hand drops to one win and four losses.
