Lady Eagles prepared for Lady Maroons for almost a week
READY, SET, GO. As their performance from the get-go showed, Ateneo was well-prepared for "The Battle of Katipunan" against UP.

With the University of the Philippines coming in undefeated and Ateneo de Manila University coming in with three wins in a row, “The Battle of Katipunan” on Sunday at the San Juan Arena was the biggest it had been in recent history.

When the match itself got going, however, the battle-hardened Lady Eagles stamped their class on the upstart Lady Maroons.

Soundly winning in spikes, 40-32, in blocks, 4-1, and in aces, 9-7, all while forcing 22 errors from their opponents, Ateneo pulled off a shocker in blanking erstwhile undefeated UP.

The final score read 25-14, 25-19, and 25-21 in favor of the blue side. The standings then read 5-1 Ateneo and 4-1 UP.

Playing right in the middle of a jam-packed crowd, the Lady Eagles showed no jitters and drew contributions from all over. Jho Maraguinot and Bea De Leon scored 11 points apiece while Mich Morente had 10 points to her name.

Kat Tolentino chipped in nine points while Jia Morado tallied 38 excellent sets.

All this, undoubtedly a product of all the work Ateneo put in. Work that they have been doing for almost a week as assistant coach Sherwin Meneses shared, “Simula nung dumating si coach Tai (Bundit), nag-prepare na yung team para sa UP.”

Head coach Tai Bundit missed the Lady Eagles’ two games before returning last Monday.

Still, Meneses admitted that they never expected a sweep. “Hindi talaga namin naisip kasi contender talaga UP ngayon,” he said.

In the end, Meneses said Ateneo was nothing but glad that all their work paid off. “Malaking panalo talaga ‘to kasi tied kami sa number one,” he said.
