BLANK SPACE. DLSU has won all of its last nine sets - the last time they dropped one was two weeks ago.
For the third time in a row, De La Salle University scored a straight sets win in the 79th Season of the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
Still, the University of the East made them work for it.
The Lady Spikers got the better of the Lady Warriors in a tight first set before Kianna Dy and Tin Tiamzon took over in a dominant second and third sets for a clean sweep, 25-18, 25-14, 25-16, on Sunday at the San Juan Arena.
Dy and Tiamzon 12 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the defending champions to their third consecutive victory and fifth overall in six games.
That emphatic winning streak comes after DLSU dropped its first game in the tournament. Coach Ramil De Jesus said his girls have learned from that loss as he shared, “Siguro mas gusto na nilang manalo kasi mahirap talaga yung galing ka sa talo.”
He then continued, talking about the fact they last dropped a set two weeks ago, “Mahirap din kasing magbigay ng kumpyansa sa kalaban.”
That seemed to be the case in this one early on, however, as UE was only down, 18-22, before Tiamzon registered the first set in favor of the Lady Spikers.
Tiamzon and Dy kept rolling and DLSU did not allow its opponents to threaten the rest of the way.
Kim Fajardo had 41 excellent sets in the Lady Spikers’ rise to first-place. Whether or not they stay there will depend on the result of 4-0 University of the Philippines’ ongoing match.
However, De Jesus said they have much to work on in their title defense. “Nasa stage pa kami ng adjustments so ‘di pa ako ganun ka-satisfied sa laro ng mga bata,” he said.
With another loss, the Lady Warriors remained winless through six games in the tournament.
