Can University of the Philippines keep its clean sheet intact?
Katipunan neighbors University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University clash in a rematch of last year’s Final Four on Sunday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons stake their unbeaten record and hold of the solo lead in the marquee 4:00 p.m. match that will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 23 and via livestream.
With a new approach to the game, UP is making noise by winning its first four games for the Lady Maroons' best start in recent memory.
At 4-0 win-loss record UP remains on top of the heap but Ateneo and defending champion De La Salle University are breathing down the Lady Maroons’ necks with identical 4-1 records.
UP is coming off a 25-22, 25-22, 29-31, 25-19 win over University of Sto. Tomas last week.
The Lady Maroons’ “UP Ikot” - an energetic celebration of the squad after scoring a point – will be tested against the “heartstrong” mantra of the Lady Eagles.
Diana Carlos, who is averaging 14.5 points per game, Isa Molde and veterans Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola will carry the fight for UP, which was booted out by Ateneo in the Season 78 semifinals.
The Lady Maroons will take on the very hungry Lady Eagles led by Michelle Morente, who is averaging almost 16 points per outing.
“Siyempre we’re up against a very good team, their undefeated team as of now di ba? Lahat kami eager na makipaglaro sa kanila, to play against them,” said Morente. “We’re really excited to play.”
Ateneo is on a three-game roll with University of the East being its last victim in a walk in the park 25-14, 25-21, 25-21 sweep last Wednesday.
Aside from Morente, the Lady Eagles will also lean on seasoned setter Jia Morado, Bea De Leon, Jho Maraguinot, Kat Tolentino and Maddie Madayag.
