Lady Maroons face acid test in Lady Tams duel
Sophomore hitter Diana Carlos of University of the Philippines will try to rally the Lady Maroons back on the winning track.

The University of the Philippines faces a test of character Wednesday as the Lady Maroons try to get back on the winning track in a duel with the dangerous Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The match starts at 2:00 p.m. and will air live on S+A Channel 23 and S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.

UP started the season blazing, winning their first four games in a convincing fashion before hitting a brick wall Sunday in a battle with their Katipunan neighbor Ateneo de Manila University.

The Lady Eagles stopped the ‘UP Ikot’ dead on its tracks with a shocking 25-14, 25-19, 25-21, win to hand the Lady Maroons their first loss in five games. The loss pulled UP to third spot behind defending champion De La Salle and Ateneo, who are both with identical 5-1 win-loss marks.

Against FEU, veterans Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon need to bounce back big time to erase their subpar performance last game where they only scored three and four, respectively, to help Season 78 Rookie of the Year Isa Molde and Diana Carlos, who remain the most consistent scorers for the Diliman-based squad.

They will need to put their A-game on when they take on the Lady Tamaraws, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season, highlighted by a 25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20 conquest of the Lady Bulldogs last Saturday.

Coach Shaq delos Santos is aware that consistency will be the key if FEU wants to go further.

"Hopefully itong winning streak magsimula ng magandang kumpiyansa. Lagi kong sinasabi sa mga players namin na itong last three games, kunin natin. Huwag tayong umasa sa second round, itong first round, dito tayo kumuha. Kung magkakaroon ng adjustment, I think hindi na masyadong mahirap para sa amin," he said.

With Toni Basas, Bernadeth Pons and Jerrili Malabanan playing on a high level, FEU will give UP a tough battle.
