Far Eastern University dealt University of the Philippines its second straight setback while extending its winning run to three with a 25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, victory in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Tamaraws tied their victim at 4-2 win-loss record at third to fourth.
Bernadeth Pons, Remy Palma and Toni Basas powered the Lady Tamaraws in extinguishing the comeback attempt of the Lady Maroons after their veteran hitter Nicole Tiamzon went down with a right ankle injury late in the second set.
Pons finished with game-high 24 points off 22 kills and a pair of kill blocks while adding 23 digs and 14 excellent receptions on the defensive end for an all-around performance that drew praises from head coach Shaq delos Santos.
"Sobrang happy (ako sa nilalaro niya) kasi hindi lang sa harap eh. 'Yun nga sabi ko before siya 'yung second libero ko sa likuran kung kailangan ko ng floor defense," he said.
Basas and Palma scored 11 markers each for the Morayta-based squad.
Up, 2-1, in the match, FEU blew open the fourth set with a barrage of hits midway in the frame to put the fight out of the Diliman-based squad.
After controlling the opening set, the Lady Tams were ahead, 23-20, in the second frame when Tiamzon fell down on the floor clutching her right ankle. She was helped out of the court.
UP fought back to tie the set at 23 with a Caryl Sandoval hit. The Lady Maroons then saved a set point before Diana Carlos ignited the closing rally with a kill to steal the frame.
Carlos had 17 points while Isa Molde got 11 for UP. Carlos had 27 digs while Molde registered 21 digs and 20 excellent receptions to showcase their skills in floor defense in a lost cause.
Sandoval and Marian Buitre got eight points each for the Lady Maroons.
