Unbeaten Ateneo de Manila wants to keep its clean record intact at the close of the eliminations first round.
Three-peat seeking Ateneo de Manila University stakes its unbeaten record as the Blue Eagles attempt to complete a sweep of the first round against an inconsistent De La Salle Green Spikers Saturday in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.
With three-time Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo, veterans Josh Villanueva, Rex Intal and setter Ish Polvorosa connecting with newcomer 6-foot-8 Russian-American Antony Koyfman, the Loyola-based squad stormed to six straight victories to maintain its hold of the solo lead.
The Blue Eagles have an advantage in the 10:00 a.m. match that will air live over S+A HD and via livestream with the Green Spikers missing the services of its explosive hitter Raymark Woo (knee injury).
But Ateneo, which demolished University of the Philippines, 25-18, 26-24, 25-16, last Sunday, still have to be very cautious as DLSU found a way to fill the scoring void left by Woo, who is out for at least three weeks because of a left knee injury.
Arjay Onia scored 21 while Rafael Del Pilar, Cris Dumago and Levin Dumayuga all had 12 points in DLSU’s 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, win over University of the East last Sunday for the Taft-based squad’s second win in six games. DLSU is looking for its first back-to-back wins of the season.
Meanwhile, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and University of Sto. Tomas Tigers clash at 8:00 a.m.
The Tams parade a 4-2 slate at third place while the Tigers follow closely behind with 3-3 card tied with UP.
FEU defeated the Maroons, 27-25, 25-17, 25-20, last Wednesday behind the efforts of Peter Quiel and Jude Garcia.
UST is coming off a 23-25, 18-25, 19-25, defeat at the hands of second-running National University.
