National University closed the first round of 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament elimination with a 26-24, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20, win over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons at the MOA Arena Sunday.
Fauzi Ismail scattered 21 points anchored on 19 attacks while Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad added 12 markers each to help the Bulldogs extend its winning run to five and keep a tight hold of the second spot with 6-1 win-loss record behind unbeaten back-to-back champions Ateneo de Manila (7-0).
But NU coach Dante Alinsunurin was far from satisfied with his team’s performance especially in the third set and with the Bulldogs’ 34 errors.
“Medyo ito ang pinakapangit na performance naming first round kasi hindi namin nabawasan ‘yung mga unforced errors,” said Alinsunurin. “Nandyan ang service error namin at attack errors namin. Sana sa susunod naming game ay mabawasan na talaga namin.”
Kim Malabunga had 10 points while setter Kim Dayandante dished out 35 excellent sets and four markers for NU.
The Maroons dropped to 3-4 card and down with their third straight defeat.
John Mark Millete scored 20 points coming from 16 attacks, two kill blocks and a pair of aces for UP, which played without skipper Wendel Miguel who is out for at least two weeks because of a dislocated shoulder.
Alfred Valbuena had nine for the Diliman-based squad.
