Ateneo de Manila's Michelle Morente is ABS-CBN Sports' Player of the Week.
Michelle Morente returned to the much-anticipated match against De La Salle University as if she never skipped last season’s action for Ateneo.
There was no sign of nervousness, no fear. All nerves of steel.
When the Lady Eagles found themselves trailing the Lady Spikers at set point both in the first and second sets, the Katipunan-based squad turned on the leadership of the third year hitter to keep the team together and charge back to win both frames that shocked their bitter rival.
Behind Morente’s heroics, Ateneo drew first blood in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament with a 26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17 win Sunday that gave the Lady Eagles the solo lead.
Ateneo closed the first round of eliminations with a 6-1 win-loss record.
Morente in the Lady Eagles’ lone assignment in the week that was, scored her season-high 25 points coming off 20 kills, three kill blocks and a pair of aces.
Her performance earned her the nod as ABS-CBN Sports’ Player of the Week.
Morente, who had to sit out last season’s edition because of academic problems, was just happy that she’s able get another crack at the marquee rivalry and contribute for the cause.
“Syempre masaya kasi one year akong wala,” said the 22-year-old volleybelle. “Ang sarap sa feeling na parang di ako nawala.”
Morente during the match also showed her defensive skills with 19 digs and 12 excellent receptions.
“I’m flattered di ko magagawa ‘yun kung wala yung tulong ng mga teammates and coaches ko,” said Morente of her triple-double stat line.
Her scoring and defense were impressive but it was her leadership that greatly contributed to the Lady Eagles’ revenge victory against the team team that dragged Ateneo off the throne they held for two seasons last year.
“Mich was very vocal (during the game),” said Ateneo middle Bea De Leon.
Morente bested her teammate setter Jia Morado, Cherry Rondina and EJ Laure of University of Sto. Tomas, Shaya Adorador of University of the East and National University’ Jaja Santiago for the recognition.
