National University opens the second round with a straight sets win over Adamson.
National University head coach Roger Gorayeb had the liberty to experiment with his rotation that almost backfired in the third set.
The Lady Bulldogs went behind by seven in the third frame before sparking a big run to complete a 25-21, 25-20, 25-19, straight sets victory over the Adamson Lady Falcons Wednesday to open their second round campaign in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
NU collected its second straight win to improve to 5-3 win-loss record.
But Gorayeb was far from satisfied with their win.
“Sana (recovery na). Madami pang laro, mahirap. Kada laro, iba-iba 'yung emosyon ng mga bata, iba-iba ang karakter nila sa laro,” said Gorayeb. “Hindi mo rin masabi. Ang susunod naming kalaban, La Salle, hindi pwedeng ganyang klase lang.”
Jaja Santiago scored 15 points anchored on 13 attacks and a pair of kill blocks while Jorelle Singh got 10 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Down, 5-12, in the third after taking the first two sets, Santiago and Singh led NU’s fightback to chop away the lead of the Lady Falcons, who in the stretch gave away a string of errors.
The Lady Bulldogs blasted six straight points – five coming off Adamson’s miscues – to take a 17-16 advantage. The set was again tied at 18 but NU scored four unanswered points for a 22-18 lead.
Adamson stopped the bleeding on the next play before NU scored the closing three-point run.
The Lady Falcons dropped its eighth straight match and are down to a 15-game losing skid since last season.
Jema Galanza had 15 points while Bernadette Flora finished with nine markers for Adamson.
