Ateneo and FEU clash in a battle of unbeaten teams to close out the first round of UAAP men's football action.
MATCHES on THURSDAY (MORO LORENZO)
2:00 - UST vs. NU (Men's)
4:00 - Ateneo vs. FEU (Men's)
League-leading Ateneo de Manila University will be targeting a first round sweep when they take on unbeaten collegiate football powerhouse Far Eastern University in UAAP men's football action, Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo.
Six teams have tried, and six teams have failed to bring down the surging Blue Eagles in the first round. Led by sophomore standout Jarvey Gayoso, as well as a talented crop of rookies, the Katipunan-based squad have gotten past every challenge put in front of them so far, and a sweep of the first round should establish them as top contenders for the title this season. In their last outing, Ateneo gained a measure of revenge by taking down defending champions University of the Philippines in a rematch of last season's finals.
Plagued by injuries in the tail end of the first half of the season, the Tamaraws charged out the gate, racking up four straight wins, before figuring in back-to-back draws against defending champions UP and most recently University of the East. With star senior Paolo Bugas still questionable to play after injuring his ankle, it will be interesting to see how this matchup of high-powered offenses plays out.
In the earlier match of the afternoon, National University will try to make it three in a row when they battle University of Santo Tomas.
After a rough start to the season, it looks like the NU Bulldogs are beginning to find their stride. Under the tutelage of new head coach Mari Aberasturi, the Bulldogs snatched back-to-back wins in their last two outings against Adamson and De La Salle to keep them in the hunt for a playoff berth.
Much like the Bulldogs, the UST Tigers are also managing to find their groove after beginning the season with back-to-back losses. Big wins over Adamson and UE, while getting points in a draw with DLSU is currently keeping the Growling Tigers in the playoff race.
