Mike Arbela (12) provided the lone conversion in NU's win over UST
A single goal from Mike Arbela was enough for National University to pull out a win over University of Santo Tomas to end the first round with their third straight win in UAAP men's football action, Thursday afternoon at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field.
Holding identical records going into the final match of the first round, NU and UST were number four and number five in the rankings, with the Growling Tigers ahead on goal difference.
After a tight first half, NU took control of the match courtesy of Arbela's 55th minute goal to break the scoreless deadlock.
With their backs against the wall, UST turned the aggression up in the final few minutes of the match and managed to come up with two clean attempts that were just inches off their targets.
Unfortunately for the España side, they couldn't get anything to drop and National U escaped with the important win.
"Happy tayo na nanalo, pero hindi pa satisfied," said NU coach Mari Aberasturi, who noted that improvements still have to be made. "Tactically, marami pang kulang, if we want to progress in the second round."
With the win, NU takes over the fourth spot in the standings with three wins, one draw, and three losses for ten points.
UST on the other hand, ends the round with two wins, one draw, and four losses for seven points.
