National University marched to its sixth straight win.
National University needed a little time to heat up before zooming to its sixth straight win.
The Bulldogs shrugged off a slow start Saturday to defeat the University of Sto. Tigers, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18, and keep its tight hold of the second spot in the 79th UAAP men’ volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
NU improved to 7-1 win-loss record behind the unbeaten back-to-back champions Ateneo de Manila but head coach Dante Alinsunurin rued the slow start of his wards.
“Matagal na naming ginagamot yan. Every time na lang na may game kami para kaming diesel na kailangan munang mag-init bago maglaro ng mga players ko,” said Alinsunurin, whose team beat UST in the first round in straight sets last March 1. “Naga-adjust naman kami para sa next game namin maging mas maganda ang simula namin.”
Bryan Bagunas showed the way for the Bulldogs with 23 points – all but one coming off attacks – while adding nine excellent receptions.
Fauzi Ismail scored 15 points while Kim Malabunga and Francis Saura finished with nine markers each for NU, which unleashed 56 attacks anchored on Kim Dayandante’s 44 excellent sets.
The Espana-based squad absorbed its third straight loss to fall back to 3-5 mark.
Jerico Jose and Manuel Medina had 12 points each while Arnold Bautista got 10 for UST.
