DLSU's Kyla Inquig, left most, celebrates after scoring a goal against FEU.
A late goal from Kyla Inquig powered De La Salle University past Far Eastern University, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Field, ensuring that they stay at the top of the UAAP Season 79 women's football tournament standings after round one.
After a slow first saw both teams go scoreless, the league-leading Lady Archers pushed the action and pressured the FEU defense.
As it looked like the Lady Archers were on their way to dropping points for the first time this season, a well-placed free kick from Irish Navaja found Inquig, who headed it in in the 85th minute for the lead.
FEU would try to pull even, but as how things were all game long, the Lady Tamaraws' couldn't get their shots to fall and no equalizer materialized for the former three-peat champions.
"They still showed true character, they still pushed," DLSU coach Hans Smit said after the match, although citing that he felt his girls were lax heading into the final matchup of the first round. "But today is not the same day as the other three games,"
"It's mental again, they just need to be more concentrated," added Smit.
With the win, DLSU goes 4-0-0 in the first round for 12 points.
