Lady Eagles look to add more woes to slumping Lady Maroons
Waxing-hot Ateneo de Manila and ice-cold University of the Philippines cross paths in a 'Battle of Katipunan' rematch.

Streaking Ateneo de Manila University looks to continue its rampage in the second round of eliminations and add more woes to the slumping University of the Philippines Saturday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.

Game time is set at 4:00 p.m. airing live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.

The Lady Eagles are on a five-game winning streak and are brimming with confidence after its morale-boosting 26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, win over archrival defending champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers a week ago to close the first round.

The Katipunan-based squad is perched at the solo top spot with a 6-1 win-loss record. Ateneo’s lone loss came at the hands of National University last February 8.

Third year players Michelle Morente, who dropped her season-best 25 points the last time out, Jho Maraguinot, Bea De Leon, newcomer Kat Tolentino and veteran setter Jia Morado delivered the goods for Ateneo in the first round.

They are expected to show the same performance they had during their first seven games as the Lady Eagles try to duplicate their 25-14, 25-19, 25-21, victory over their Katipunan neighbor last February 26.

That loss stated UP’s skid.

After a promising start that saw the Lady Maroons collect four straight victories including a sweep over DLSU that snapped a nine-year head-to-head losing streak to the Taft-based squad, UP came crashing down with three losses in a row.

The Lady Maroons’ campaign absorbed a major blow when graduating libero Princess Gaiser’s collegiate career came to an abrupt end after sustaining a left ACL injury in UP’s 23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-18, 12-15 defeat against NU last Sunday.

UP is tied with University of Sto. Tomas with 4-3 slates.

With Gaiser out, Justine Dorog will be the Lady Maroons’ main piece on floor defense while Isa Molde, Diana Carlos, Marian Buitre and graduating players Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola need to raise their level of play to help UP get off their slump with the race to a Final Four spot heads already in its crucial phase.
