After three straight draws to end the first round, former back-to-back champions Far Eastern University opened the second round with a 2-1 win over the surging National University in UAAP Season 79 men's football action, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
It took less than fifteen minutes for the Tamaraws to get going, as Alex Rayos gave FEU an early advantage fourteen minutes into the matchup.
Eight minutes later however, NU's most consistent scorer this season, Lawrence Colina, brought the Bulldogs at level after blasting in a free kick right through FEU keeper RJ Joyel's hands.
Looking to avoid a fourth straight stalemate, FEU found a savior in the form of Audie Menzi, who one-upped Colina and fired in a free kick of his own.
NU had another chance at an equalizer in injury time, but couldn't convert this time, as the Tamaraws held on for the win.
"I think our movement is better, as I've been telling the team, what's important is every game, we have a better understanding of our system," FEU head coach Vince Santos said post match.
While Santos noted that he sees the team improving, he added that he wants to see them do better on the offensive end.
"I feel like we are getting better, but we have to score more goals. It's not enough to have good movement, have possesion or make penetration if we don't score."
FEU improves to five wins and three draws for 18 points in the season, while NU sees their three game streak snapped, and they fall to three wins, one draw, and four losses for ten points.
