Majoy Baron of De La Salle University denies the attack of National University's Jaja Santiago.
Fourth year middle blocker Majoy Baron of the defending champion De La Salle University played a monster net game.
Baron enjoyed her block party to lead the Lady Spikers to a 25-21, 25-11, 15-25, 25-12, win over the National University Lady Bulldogs in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
Playing like with the same intensity and focus she showed last year when she won the Best Blocker award, Baron registered six kill blocks in 15 attempts to highlight her 15-point performance for the Taft-based squad, which had nine kill blocks overall.
With her defensive gems, Baron single-handedly outplayed the whole NU crew with two more kill blocks.
“Siguro nabasa ko lang ‘yung mga palo nila,” she said. “Kasi ako pag naka-block ako at natimingan ko siya parang sa next nakukuha ko lalo yung timing once nabasa ko siya."
Baron gave the Lady Bulldogs hitters a hard time penetrating DLSU’s wall. NU had to bleed to get its 34 attack points from 112 attempts.
Lady Bulldogs top spiker Jorelle Singh toiled to score hits with Baron guarding her attacking angle. Singh had a hellish 9-of-26 attacking clip while Aiko Urdas didn’t fare better with 7-of-27.
But Baron’s biggest success in their elimination round rematch was outplaying NU’s 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago.
Santiago was limited to only nine points and scored only a pair of kill blocks.
Baron said that she made sure to take Santiago out of her game.
“Oo naman syempre (na-challenge ako kasi) si Jaja ‘yan,” she said. “Sobrang challenging kaya sobrang binantayan ko siya. Alam ko naman na siya yung go-to-guy (ng NU).”
DLSU will have a weeklong rest before squaring off against University oif the Philippines.
Expect Baron to be there in front of the net, doing her thing.
