Lady Eagles claw Tigresses for seventh win in a row
Ateneo de Manila extended its winning run to seven straight to tighten its hold of the top spot.

Ateneo de Manila staved off the third set comeback attempt of the gritty University of Sto. Tomas, 25-10, 26-24, 28-26, to extend its winning streak to seven in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles survived the Tigresses' set point advantage in the third after squandering a five-point lead to improve to 8-1 win-loss record on top of the standings. Ateneo also inched closer to securing at least a playoff for the semifinals.

"Hindi ko naman expected (na straight sets) pero umiral ang teamwork ng Ateneo so nag-straight sets and lahat gumawa," said Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses.

Jho Maraguinot and Bea De Leon scored 12 points each while Kat Tolentino and Michelle Morente finished with 10 each for the Lady Eagles, who completed their elimination round sweep of UST in a match that saw Ateneo drop 16 service aces.

Down, 18-23, the Tigresses sparked a telling rally to take the set point advantage, 25-24, capped by EJ Laure's attack. Laure commited an error on the next play followed by Ana Gopico's ace to put Ateneo at match point, 26-25.

UST's Ria Meneses saved a match point to tie the frame but back-to-back errors by the Tigresses handed the victory to Ateneo.

UST dropped to 5-4 for a four-way logjam with University of the Philippines, Far Eastern University and National University.

Cherry Rondina scored 14 points while Laure and Meneses combined for 17 markers for the Tigresses, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped.
