'No invite' - Ateneo's Ricky Palou

“None of our players received an invitation, men's or women's." -- LVPI secretary-general Ricky Palou.
Ateneo de Manila University officials denied that players of the former two-time UAAP champions received a letter of invitation to join the women’s national team pool.
Former Ateneo athletic director and Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. secretary-general Ricky Palou told reporters that setter Jia Morado, Maddie Madayag and Kat Tolentino were surprised that their names were in the list of invited players.
While Madayag and Tolentino were handpicked by women’s head coach Francis Vicente as prospects to play in the Asian U-23, Morado was not included in the 25-man pool headlined by Alyssa Valdez, Mika Reyes and Jaja Santiago announced by LVPI Tuesday.
“The players said they didn't get any, and if the athletics office got the invitation, they would have asked the players also, di ba?” said Palou Wednesday during the Lady Eagles’ match against University of Sto. Tomas in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“None of our players received an invitation, men's or women's,” he added. “They were surprised, 'We're in the pool? We didn't even try out. How can we be in the pool.'”
LVPI held three tryouts for the national team pool in Manila, Cebu and Davao in search of players that will represent the country in the Asian U-23 in Thailand on May 13 to 21, the AVC Women’s Senior Volleyball Champion in Manila on August 9 to 17 and the 29th Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games on August 19 to 31.
Ateneo players were unavailable to join the Manila tryouts from January 28, 29 and 31 with the schedule too close to the opening of the UAAP. The UAAP Season 79 started February 4.
“(Hindi sila nakapunta) dahil nga No. 1, may on-going UAAP, and No. 2, may klase. So talagang yung oras,” said Lady Eagles team manager Tonyboy Liao.
Taking that in consideration, the LVPI decided to invite specific players to join the special tryouts last March 12. Included in the list were Morado, Tolentino and Madayag; Kim Dy and Dawn Macandili of De La Salle; Remy Palma and Toni Rose Basas of Far Eastern University, Isa Molde of University of the Philippines and Jasmine Nabor of National University.
Only Grethcel Soltones showed up in the special tryout for current UAAP and NCAA players.
Dy and Macandili expressed their interest to join the pool and were included in the final list.
Liao said that Madayag and Tolentino are free to join the national pool training but only after the UAAP season, which will close early May.
“Ako sa tingin ko, sasali ‘yun,” he said. “Kasi siyempre kahit naman sino siguro, pag inimbita ka to play for the national team, bakit ka naman aayaw? Sasali at sasali ‘yan. Yun na nga, wala naman kaming nakuhang imbitasyon.”
LVPI is set to release a statement regarding the issue within the day.
