An early goal from Jarvey Gayoso (11) was enough to push Ateneo past NU in UAAP men's football action
Sophomore striker Jarvey Gayoso hit early for Ateneo, and the Blue Eagles never looked back, as they held on to beat National University, 1-0, in UAAP Season 79 men's football action, Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Looking to break a two-game streak of draws, Ateneo went to work early, with Gayoso sending in another perfectly measured free kick right though the hands of NU keeper Chris Perocho in the eleventh minute.
29 minutes into the match, National U appeared to have leveled the match, but instead a handball was called, negating the goal.
The Bulldogs had one more close attempt in the second half, with Jericho Dagsa sending a free kick just inches above the crossbar.
Rupert Baña also had a chance to double the Ateneo lead, letting if fly off a Gayoso assist, but the shot went wide to the right.
Ateneo ultimately held on to the 1-0 win for their seventh win of the season.
"Nung first half, ang ganda nung mga chances, ang ganda nung execution," Ateneo head coach JP Merida said post match. "Yung laro na ito, napaka-importante, especially since this is the second round, three points are very important talaga."
With the win, Ateneo improves to seven wins and two draws in the season, good for 23 points. NU on the other hand, drops their first two games in the second round and they fall to three wins, one draw, and five losses for 10 points.
