“Ang galing din nila. Parang nakakapag-adjust sila in the middle of the game -- Jho Maraguinot on FEU
Jho Maraguinot played a monster game in Ateneo de Manila University’s five-set win over Far Eastern University Saturday.
She pumped in 23 points to help the Lady Eagles outlast the Lady Tamaraws, 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 15-8 and earn a Final Four ticket in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
While Maraguinot showcased her scoring prowess with 19 kills, three aces and a kill block, the third year hitter couldn’t help but express her admiration to the Lady Tams in the best way she can.
“Nakakaloka sila!” exclaimed the Alitagtag, Batangas native to a rival that Ateneo has dominated in eight straight UAAP head-to-heads.
Maraguinot was pertaining to FEU’s gallant stand, forcing a fifth set even after a 0-2 match deficit.
“Ang galing din nila,” she said. “Parang nakakapag-adjust sila in the middle of the game, nag-a-adjust sila.”
Lady Tams coach Shaq Delos Santos tweaked his strategy during the game, switching their ball distribution to Bernadeth Pons, Toni Basas, Remy Palma and even fielding setter Angelica Cayuna as a hitter.
“Kanina, biglang ginawang spiker ‘yung isang setter. So ang galing din ng adjustments nila and porsyento rin, porsyento-porsyento sila,” Maragunot added. “May times na puro Pons, puro Basas di ba?”
But when the Lady Eagles needed someone to lean on to in the closing stretch, Maraguinot stepped up to nail timely hits – the usual things she delivers.
“Wala naman. Wala lang, nag-focus lang ako. The usual. Sabi ko di ba mas magfo-focus ako this second round so ‘yun lang,” said Maraguinot, who is averaging 17 points per game in the second round.
With Maraguinot already in beast mode, the Lady Eagles now parade a 9-1 win-loss record for the solo lead.
