University of Sto. Tomas rips Adamson apart in four sets to get back in the win column.
University of Sto. Tomas bounced back from a setback at the expense of the listless Adamson University Lady Falcons, 25-12, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19 Saturday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigresses improved to 6-4 win-loss record but not after giving Adamson its second set win of the season.
Up two sets, UST were caught with its guard down by the Lady Falcons. Adamson built a 20-16 lead before the Tigresses tied it at 20 with a telling rally capped by EJ Laure’s kill. Bernadette Flora denied Pam Lastimosa in the next play followed by back-to-back aces by Jane Dahab and a defensive gem at the net by the Lady Falcons to reach set point.
UST saved two set points but Laure’s cross went long to hand Adamson the frame, its second frame win since taking the second set of their four-set loss to University of the East at the end of the first round last March 5.
However, that proved to be Adamson’s last hurrah of the match as UST built a 20-8 lead to break open the fourth frame and never looked back.
Cherry Rondina topscored for the Espana-based squad with 18 points including 15 coming off attacks. Laure got 12 kills in her 14 points while Lastimosa and Ria Meneses finished with 11 markers each for the Tigresses, who rained down 55 attacks and 10 aces to submit the Lady Falcons and rebound from its straight sets loss to Ateneo last Wednesday.
"Pinatagal ng mga players eh, gusto ata ng mas maraming TV exposure eh," UST coach Kungfu Reyes said in a jest. "Di ko alam sa kanila eh."
But the mentor was disappointed in their third and even in the last part of thr fourth when Adamson mounted a rally after being down by 12.
"Nanalo kami pero hindi pa rin ganoon kaganda ang panalo namin," he said. "Hindi na ako tumayo (para kausapin sila) hinayaan ko na sila na maglaro na sila-sila lang muna. Iisa lang naman ang gusto namin ipakita sa mga players na kung hindi kayo magtrabaho, tatalunin ka ng kalaban. Eh si Adamson very aggressive pagdating sa depensa. They kept on trying lalo na sa opensa."
"Kung sino ang magta-trabaho siya ang mananalo that's why nanalo ang Adamson (sa third set)," Reyes added. "Yung Adamson they are trying hard para makakuha ng set o manalo sa game."
Adamson remained winless in 10 games.
Jema Galanza scored 16 points with all but one coming off spikes while Joy Dacoron had 11 for the Lady Falcons.
