JB Borlongan and the UP Maroons handed FEU their first loss of the season
A second half goal from Raphael Resuma made all the difference, as defending champions University of the Philippines took down previously unbeaten Far Eastern University, 1-0, in UAAP Season 79 men's football action, Saturday evening at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
While both squads went scoreless in the first half, there was definitely no shortage of clear chances, with three good attemps between both squads in just the opening minutes of the match.
UP remained the more aggressive squad for the rest of the half, with two more on-target attempts that could have easily made it a two-goal advantage.
It was in the second half that UP found their mark, with substitute Resuma finally breaking the deadlock, making good on a cross from JB Borlongan for the 65th minute conversion.
There would be no equalizer from the yellow shirts, and UP held on for the important W.
"This bunch, their mental toughness is really fantastic," UP head coach Anto Gonzales said, praising his boys about not giving up even after missing a handful of open shots in the first half. "No problems with the motivation, when things are down, they can easily pick themselves up."
Gonzales also praised Resuma, who played the hero for UP this time around. "That boy is a hard worker, he definitely deserves the goal, he's been working hard in training and in games, he runs a lot, he works hard for the team, so he deserves that goal.
With the win, UP ties FEU on points with five wins, three draws, and one loss for 18 points each. The defending champions hold the edge in goal difference however, but just by a single conversion.
