National University advances to its fifth straight Final Four stint.
Only two Final Four tickets remain.
National University extended its winning streak to eight but more importantly secured a seat in the semifinals with a 25-21, 25-23, 26-24, win over Far Eastern University Sunday in the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Bulldogs followed archrivals defending champion Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles (10-0) to the next round with their ninth win in 10 games to keep a tight hold of the second spot.
Fauzi Ismail and Season 78 rookie of the year James Natividad led the way for NU with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
“Sana magtuloy-tuloy lang ‘yung mga nangyayari sa amin,” said Bulldogs coach Dante Alinsunurin.
But even after their repeat win over the Tams, the mentor admonished his wards’ for losing focus and committing crucial errors.
Alinsunurin was particularly disappointed in the third set. NU squandered a 23-21 lead and a match point before holding on in the closing stretch to complete the sweep.
“May kasama pa rin kasing suwerte e, ‘yung tipong nawawala na ‘yung momentum namin tapos nagkaka-error sila na crucial,” the mentor said. “Pero sabi ko nga sa kanila, 'sana next time hindi na tayo umasa sa suwerte. Dapat every time na nasa court tayo, kailangan natin tumrabaho.'”
FEU absorbed its third loss in a row for a 5-5 card.
Skipper Richard Solis had 11 points as the only Tams player in double figures.
