National University libero Gayle Valdez will have to win back the trust of head coach Roger Gorayeb to earn her minutes inside the court.
Valdez and her co-libero Joni Chavez rode the bench in the first three sets before seeing action in the fifth set of the Lady Bulldogs’ 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13, win over Ateneo de Manila Wednesday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Gorayeb kept his liberos nailed on the bench in what he called a ‘silent suspension’ after his defense specialists performed subpar in their last couple of games especially in NU’s four-set win over University of the East.
Never mind if they gave Ateneo an atrocious 20 points from the service line.
“Pinaghandaan namin. Si Jaja (Santiago) pina-backline namin, wala ng alisan ‘yan,” he added.
But the mentor was forced to field Valdez in the fourth before sending her back to the bench after two rallies midway in the frame. And with the game on the line, Gorayeb started Valdez in the fifth and kept her inside to help NU man the floor.
With Valdez providing the much-needed defensive gems, the Lady Bulldogs outlasted Ateneo to improve to 7-4 win-loss slate at solo third spot.
Naging maganda naman,” he added.
The fourth year libero understood what Gorayeb wanted them to learn.
“Siyempre po 'pag pinasok ulit kami, kailangan gawin namin ‘yung pinaka-best namin kasi kailangang-kailangan kami ng team,” said Valdez, who had six digs.
Valdez vowed to play her role as NU marches in its final push to secure a Final Four berth.
“’Yung mindset ko kailangan magbago,” she said.
