National University shoots for its ninth straight win and the last semifinals twice-to-beat advantage.
With a spot in the Final Four already secured, National University now sets its eyes on clinching the last semifinals twice-to-beat advantage in an elimination round rematch against De La Salle University Saturday.
The Bulldogs and Green Spikers clash in the 8:00 a.m. curtain-raiser of the 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
NU defeated Far Eastern University, 25-21, 25-23, 6-24, last week to earn a spot in the next round and extended its winning streak to eight. The Bulldogs are at solo second spot with 9-1 win-loss record behind the unbeaten back-to-back champions Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles (11-0).
A win will give NU a twice-to-beat advantage either in a Final Four scenario or in a stepladder semifinals in case the Blue Eagles make a clean sweep of the elims that will propel them straight into the best-of-three Finals.
DLSU cannot afford to lose another game to keep its semis hopes alive.
The Green Spikers parade a 4-6 record tied with University of Sto. Tomas at fifth to sixth spot.
Coming off a 27-29, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18, win over also-ran Adamson a week ago, the Taft-based squad need to win all their remaining games for at least a chance to force a playoff in case no other team still in semis spot contention reaches nine wins.
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines and UST clash at 10:00 a.m.
The match will air live on ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
The Maroons are at solo fourth spot with a 5-5 slate and are coming off a straight sets win over University of the East, 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 while the Tigers dropped a 25-22, 23-25, 13-25, 21-25, duel with Ateneo.
