University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern University clash in a key showdown which has a major implication in their Final Four hopes.
The University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern University stake their chance to advance in the next round as the Tigresses and Lady Tamaraws rekindle their old rivalry Saturday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Opening serve is at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
With just three Final Four slots remaining after league-leading Ateneo de Manila University occupied the first seat, UST and FEU both need to win as many games as they can in their remaining assignments to keep their semis hopes alive.
The Tigers are currently at fourth spot with a 6-4 win-loss record, a win behind National University (7-4). Ateneo (9-2) and reigning titlist De La Salle University (8-2) occupy the top two spots.
UST bounced back from a straight sets loss to Ateneo, where it saw its four-game winning streak snapped, by taking down the listless Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-12, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, last week.
But Tigresses coach Kungfu Reyes was not happy with the way his wards played the last time out. He is looking forward for a better effort this time.
"Hopefully, wake-up call para sa amin. Kailangang ayusin namin, otherwise, may paglalagyan kami," said Reyes, who wants to steer UST back in the Final Four after missing the last four.
"Kung kalahati lang ang effort, kalahati rin ang resulta. Sana everytime, maging all-out na sila kasi second round. This could is a turning point kasi kami ng FEU, UP and NU, iisa na lang ang goal namin. Pare-parehas gustong pumasok ng Final Four," he added.
Reyes will bank on Cherry Rondina, EJ Laure, Pam Lastimosa and Ria Meneses to duplicate their 25-16, 21-25, 26-24., 25-20, win against the Morayta-based squad in the first round.
FEU absorbed a heartbreaking 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 8-15 loss to Ateneo last Sunday.
"Kailangan naming makabawi. Especially ngayon, crucial na ang position namin. Hindi naman kami nawawalan ng pag-asa, kami na ang bahala kung paano namin ia-accept. Yung team muna, kailangang ayusin namin," said FEU coach Shaq Delos Santos.
The Lady Tams will lean on their ‘Big Three’ Bernadeth Pons, Remy Palma and Toni Basas.
