National University squares off with University of the Philippines without head coach Roger Gorayeb.
National University marches into battle Sunday without its head coach Roger Gorayeb as the Lady Bulldogs aim to secure at least a playoff for a Final Four spot in a duel with University of the Philippines in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
Gorayeb will skip the match scheduled at 4:00 p.m. to attend the high school graduation of his son.
“Sa Sunday wala ako graduation ng anak ko sa La Salle-Greenhills ng alas-kuwarto. Nandoon naman ako sa practice hanggang Sabado,” the said mentor, who will leave the coaching duties to his lieutenant Edjet Mabbayad.
Gorayeb is confident that his wards will accomplish its mission to move a step closer to a semifinals spot in the battle that will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
The Lady Bulldogs parade a 7-4 win-loss record tied with University of Sto. Tomas at third and fourth spots.
NU hopes to ride the crest of its back-to-back victories including a huge 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13, win over semis-bound Ateneo de Manila last Wednesday.
Jaja Santiago, Jorelle Singh, Aiko Urdas, Risa Sato and setter Jasmine Nabor lead the Lady Bulldogs’ attempt to duplicate its first round victory over the Lady Maroons.
UP totes a 6-5 slate at fifth spot. The Lady Maroons are coming off a 25-15, 25-16, 25-20 win over Adamson last Wednesday.
For the meantime, Gorayeb will attend his son’s important milestone.
“S’yempre sa ating mga magulang mahalaga sa atin ‘yung ganyang mga (graduation). Minsan lang magiging fourth year ‘yan at saka syempre ang laki ng hirap mo paaaralin mo ang anak mo,” he said. “S’yempre ‘yun ang kaligayahan ng mga magulang din ‘yan eh, na maka-graduate ang anak mo. Kaya naman ni Edjet ‘yan, kaya naman nila ‘yan.”
