University of Sto. Tomas completed an elimination round head-to-head sweep against Far Eastern University and moved closer to a Final Four seat.
University of Sto. Tomas boosted its Final Four bid with a 17-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-21, win over Far Eastern University Saturday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigresses shook off a rusty start and weathered the comeback attempt of the Lady Tamaraws in the fourth frame to collect its second straight victory. UST tied National University at 7-4 win-loss record at third and fourth spots.
Tigresses top hitter EJ Laure smashed 19 of her 20 points from spikes including the match-clinching off the block kill to douse cold water on FEU’s scorching rally that closed UST’s eight-point gap to only three in the fourth set.
Skipper Cherry Rondina had 15 markers while Dimdim Pacres and Alina Bicar combined for 17 points to help the Tigresses complete an elims sweep against FEU.
UST went ahead 24-16 in the fourth only to see the Lady Tams save five match points. Laure ended the dry spell with an attack to seal the victory.
“Kulang pa sa pandiin although kontrolado pero hindi pa rin maganda sa mata eh,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes. “Kailangan lang namin y’ung end game kasi doon kami nagkukulang. Napakalaking disadvantage sa amin na match point tapos iiskor pa ng lima ang kalaban sa amin. ‘Yun pa rin ang sakit namin and kailangan naming gamutin ‘yun.”
UST’s last three assignments are against the defending champion De La Salle University on Wednesday, University of the Philippines on April 2 before closing the elims against NU on April 8.
The Lady Tams suffered back-to-back losses and pushed on the brink of elimination in the race for the last two Final Four seats after sliding to 5-6 slate.
Bernadeth Pons finished with 17 points, Toni Basas had 13 while Remy Palma got 12 for the Morayta-based squad.
FEU must sweep its last three outings against University of the East on Wednesday, NU on April 1 and UP on April 5 for a chance to clinch a semis berth.
